A Weight Journey

There have been multiple times in my life where I have struggled with my weight. Like many women, I do not have an overactive metabolism and it often feels like my metabolism moves at a snails pace. I am also an emotional eater. Combine those two and you get weight issues, especially during times of stress or upheaval. To make matters worse, I am on a mediation that has the side effect of weight gain and I have found it extremely difficult to lose weight.

After university, I moved to an isolated town with my boyfriend who had chronic depression. The combination of the isolation, dealing with his problems and having a demanding job took its toll and I began to gain weight. After a few years, I realized that I was allowing my boyfriend’s depression and mental issues impact my own health too much and I started to push back and created better, healthier boundaries. This didn’t work well for him and we broke up, which was probably the best thing that could have happened to me. After some reflection, I realized that I didn’t like what I saw when I looked in the mirror and that I needed to make some changes. So, I joined SparkPeople, started eating better, counting calories and exercising. I went from a size 16 to a size 2. I looked and felt great. At that time, I had very little in regard to responsibilities or stress and that really gave me a leg up.

When I met my husband, the stress in my life greatly increased. He came with two young kids and I had never had any experience as a mother. He also came with an ex that didn’t want me around and did (and continues to do) everything in her power to undermine me and my position within the kids’ lives. It was a perfect storm that caused my anxiety to get out of control and my weight to start to come back. That was several years ago. I have tried many things to get my weight back under control but I am not nearly as successful as I was previously. I tried SparkPeople again but it was challenging to figure out how to feed my picky family while counting my own calories. I also tried HCG shots and that provided me with results but they only lasted as long as my next big stress event.

So now, at my largest, I am trying to figure out what I should do. I know that something needs to change but I don’t know what or maybe how and how to be successful. But I think I have found something that might just help. Someone at work went on the Keto diet and he lost 30 lbs in just over a month. Initially, I thought, 30 lbs in that short of time is way too much. I know this from SparkPeople – your maximum weight loss should be 3 lbs a week, otherwise your body starts to eat your bones and muscles. But that was on the premise of using caloric restriction to lose weight and Keto doesn’t restrict calories. So, I started doing research and I watched the Netflix documentary “The Magic Pill”. And the science behind it made sense to me. I also watched a few YouTube videos that talked about how horrible the Netflix documentary is. Part of the research I did was looking at the impact of Keto on fatty liver disease – I figured that it would encourage fatty liver disease because there is so much fat in the diet. That thought was debunked. And, to be honest, HCG really cut carbs out too. I’ve noticed that when I reduce my carb intake, my weight does go down and much more easily than caloric restriction. So, I've done my research and to anyone reading this, I would recommend the same thing. I am also headed to the doctor next week and I will be bringing this up with him along with the potential to change some of my medications.

But I have made a choice now. I'm going to try Keto and I'm going to take you along for the ride. I am starting June 1 - I do have a reason for having a start date. My anniversary is May 31 and I'm going to eat cheesecake and enjoy it. It also gives me time to prepare and hopefully I will be done with any sort of Keto-flu before I start my new job June 4. And, once I start the new job, I'll have to stay in a hotel for a while until some of my stuff shows up and I can move into the apartment I will be living in part time. That means I'm going to need meals made up ahead of time that I can put in the hotel fridge and microwave at meal times.

I'll blog my progress, likely once a week and tell you what I'm eating, if I get any sort of Keto-flu, how I feel and what my results are. Now, just to be clear, I am not a doctor so don't take this as medical advice. I'm going to try something and if you have tried it or are planning to try it, feel free to comment below with your own experience or questions. Also, if you have found any good recipes, share those as well. Especially breakfast because I am not a bit egg person.
